USF REUNION 2023 Prologue

They weren’t corny. They weren’t judgmental zealots who were out of 
touch. They were simply young people on fire for God! I couldn’t believe 
my eyes! There were young people who were serious about their relaƟon-
ship with God and they were on a college campus! Say what? 
 
A past to remember: The glorious past of United Student Fellowship was shared with me oŌen. “Oh 
Aniesha, you should have been here in the 90’s!” Stories of packed services, anoinƟng flowing like wa-
ter, deliverance and breakthroughs were excitedly recounted. The bonds of love and connecƟon be-
tween USF members of the previous decade were so strong that members wanted to start a church so 
that they could conƟnue to worship with one another. “Aniesha, the move of God was something 
else.” 
 
A present to celebrate: The mighty move of God was sƟll ever present under the transformaƟve 
preaching of Dr. Reginald Stepney and the leadership of Lorenzo Watson in the 2000’s. In addiƟon to 
their messages, being surrounded by brilliant, talented, hilarious, and anointed young adults who had 
an unwavering commitment to serving God transformed me for the beƩer! The love they embodied is 
what made me religiously aƩend Bible Study, Sunday evening service, and parƟcipate on both the so-
cial and banquet commiƩees. I loved USF, its members, and what it stood for. 
 
A future to generate: With waning membership in 2003, as president I couldn’t help but wonder if 
USF’s legacy would be alive and well on NC State’s campus for much longer. That year, the amazing and 
supporƟve vice president, Gerrick Suggs, and I made a concerted effort to make USF more visible on NC 
State’s campus. We were “outside” before that term was coined. We were so “outside” that for the 
2003-2004 year, USF was publicly recognized as one of the top four African American organizaƟons on 
campus that made a difference at NCSU. I was pleasantly surprised (and honored). Despite the busy-
ness and the recogniƟon, at the end of my term, I did not pass on a flaming torch to the next president, 
but instead an ember…I failed. I was embarrassed and held onto this embarrassment unƟl 2022. 
 
Ecclesiastes 3:1: To every thing there is a season, and a Ɵme to every purpose under heaven. 
 
Why did the season that I was entrusted to lead USF smolder away? It wasn’t unƟl I spoke to Lisa 
Worell that I felt differently about the “end” of USF. USF had a monumental, life-changing, and holy-
ghost filled 30 years…that’s longer than some churches last. There was nothing to mourn nor be em-
barrassed about. As we gather this weekend, I am filled with graƟtude and excitement to know that 
USF’s legacy sƟll lives on. This weekend will be filled with stories of the “good ole days” from intergen-
eraƟonal members, with celebraƟons filled with fun and laughter, and with future plans to help sup-
port the USF scholarship fund. United Student Fellowship is, indeed, alive and well, and I am so hon-
ored that I had the privilege of being a part of it!

A Tribute to Dr. Pam Banks-Lee 
 
Pam Banks-Lee is a godly woman who has touched many lives. She is an awe-
some wife to Claude Lee, a wonderful mother and grandmother, a commiƩed 
pastor/minister, and a God-given treasure to her family, church members, 
friends, and others that she meets. 
Pam graduated from North Carolina State University with a Bachelor of Science 
(BS) in Applied MathemaƟcs, a BS in TexƟle Technology, a Master of Science in 
TexƟle Materials and MarkeƟng, and a Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Fiber 
and Polymer Science (Integrated Manufacturing Systems, n.d.). Her successful 
career at North Carolina State consists of being an Associate Professor in the 
Department of TexƟle Engineers, Chemistry and Science, and she was afforded 
research opportuniƟes and authored numerous scholarly 
arƟcles. 
Pam's greatest success goes beyond just degrees, Ɵtles, and posiƟons. She is a servant leader in everyday living and 
ministry to others. Ministry is not always preaching it is serving others. Servant leadership, coined by Robert Green-
leaf in the 1970s, states that servant leaders' qualiƟes are oŌen demonstrated by puƫng people first, supporƟng 
and caring for people, nurturing and empowering others, listening and showing empathy, creaƟng a viable commu-
nity, being a visionary and modeling the behavior, and wanƟng the best for people (Greenleaf, n.d.). These charac-
terisƟcs sum up Pam. She demonstrates a servant lifestyle because of her servant's heart. 
Among her greatest accomplishments was her dedicaƟon and contribuƟons to the United Student Fellowship (USF) 
for over 20 years of the USF’s 30-year existence on campus. Pam preached some Sundays and taught New Believers 
for a Firm FoundaƟon Class on Saturdays with a heart to nurture, develop new ChrisƟans, and anchor growing Chris-
Ɵans in the Word of God. Many United Student Fellowship members sought and received counsel and advice from 
Pam because she is a great listener and does not sugarcoat words. You can trust her to speak the truth, and she ad-
dresses the issue with the Word. Pam is a very humble servant and many may not readily recognize her great 
wealth of knowledge. When she opens her mouth to speak, she speaks as a wise woman. If her opinion is wanted, 
she gives that too. Although someƟmes Pam’s advice seemed tough, and her delivery was firm, she knew it was 
needed. Like bad-tasƟng medicine, it is not very good going down, but it does a great job of making you feel beƩer 
and bringing healing. Pam's counsel and advice from the Holy Spirit someƟmes felt like that medicine. 
Pam has been blessed with many accolades, but we wanted to menƟon one specific award that Pam received at NC 
State. The Black Alumni Society (BAS) of NC State celebrated exisƟng 40 years in 2019. During this grand celebra-
Ɵon, the BAS selected and honored 40 individuals for their leadership, service and commitment to NC State, the BAS 
and beyond. Pam was among the 40 individuals to receive one of the NCSU BAS 40 for 40 Awards. What a presƟg-
ious award! Just wonderful. 
Pam is a beauƟful giŌ to the Body of Christ. She is living and serving others as Jesus modeled and instructed. Her 
love for God is real, and many experienced her love for God through her teaching, witnessing, and conversaƟon. We 
are deeply grateful to God for blessing us with Dr. Pam Banks-Lee.

Addicted Death 
 
I died a thousand deaths to addicƟons of the serious kind; 
Food, Sex, Drugs, Alcohol, and Wild Irish wine; 
I died a thousand deaths unconscious of the end; 
Not knowing the whys, trying to pretend; 
Careless, reckless the habit resumed; 
Day to day living I became consumed; 
Looking for rainbows from an infinite sky; 
Hoping for a miracle, but enjoying the high; 
Constantly praying for help from above; 
Who is this demon that shows me no love? 
Why can’t it let me be? 
Deeply aching, longing to be free; 
How can this ecstasy be so wrong? 
Allowing this demon to overtake the strong;

Are We in Rhythm with God?

This is a subject that God has been dealing with me since the beginning of the pandemic. 
Num. 9:21-23 NLT 
21 SomeƟmes the cloud stayed only overnight and liŌed the next morning. But day or night, when the cloud liŌ-
ed, the people broke camp and moved on. 
22 Whether the cloud stayed above the Tabernacle for two days, a month, or a year, the people of Israel stayed 
in camp and did not move on. But as soon as it liŌed, they broke camp and moved on. 
23 So they camped or traveled at the Lord’s command, and they did whatever the Lord told them through Mo-
ses. 
Rhythm is defined as a strong, regular, repeated paƩern of movement or sound. We see, 
hear, and experience rhythms throughout our life. The earth has rhythms. Every day, the sun 
rises in the east and sets in the west. The earth experiences a rhythm of changes called sea-
sons winter, spring, summer, and fall. The earth’s oceans have a Ɵde that comes in and goes 
out. Our human bodies have rhythms such as our heartbeat and breathing. When we walk, 
we have a certain rhythm or pace, some faster than others. We have a certain rhythm to our 
daily lives. There is a regular, repeated paƩern of movement or rouƟne we follow. The scrip-
ture I shared shows a regular, repeated paƩern of sound and movement. 
Moses and the naƟon of Israel are in the wilderness, traveling to the Land of Canaan, a land flowing with milk and hon-
ey. A land promised to them by God. God is leading them through the wilderness by way of a cloud during the day and 
a pillar of fire at night which represents HIS PRESENCE. When the cloud or pillar stopped, they stopped. When the 
cloud or pillar moved, they moved. It was not up to Israel to decide when to stop or start, it was up to God. Israel was 
in rhythm with God. Israel exchanged their rhythm for God’s rhythm. If you and I are going to successfully overcome 
every trap, temptaƟon, test, and trial, in our wilderness, and possess our promised land, we must exchange our rhythm 
for the rhythm of God. Another definiƟon of rhythm is flow. Traffic has a flow, and rivers and streams have a flow or a 
current. And so does God. The quesƟon is are we flowing with or against the current of God? 
In our marriage? 
In our finances? 
In our singleness? 
In our thought life and our eye life? 
In our mouth (what we say)? 
Is MY LIFE flowing with God? 
God is lovingly calling us to flow with Him, to get in rhythm with Him. Being in rhythm with God is:

 1. Thinking as HE Commands 
Psalm 1:1-3 NKJV 
 
1Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in 
the seat of the scornful; 
2But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night. 
3He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also 
shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper. 
 
The Psalmist encourages the reader to meditate on God’s Word. Meditate means to ponder; to give serious thought. 
Our thinking should be Word-based and not self-based. When our thinking is self-based, we will not experience the life 
that God intended for us to live. However, if we follow the advice of the Psalmist (verse 2), we will experience the life 
God designed for us to live (verse 3). 
 
2. Speaking as HE Commands 
Proverbs 18:21 MSG 
 
21Words kill, words give life; they’re either poison or fruit—you choose. 
 
Words are powerful. They are like seeds. Please remember the seeds you plant today will be the fruit you eat tomor-
row. In other words, your life is a compilaƟon of the words you have spoken over yourself. MaƩhew 12:37 ESV states 
“For by your words you will be jusƟfied, and by your words you will be condemned.” Your words will either liberate 
you or incarcerate you. This is why it is so important to speak as He commands. We are quick to speak our feelings, 
what others say about us, and what the culture or society says about us. 
No! Speak what God has said about you. He says we are the head and not the tail, we are above and not beneath. He 
said greater is He who is in you than He that is in the world. Speak as He commands. 
 
 
3. Doing as HE Commands 
 
James 1:22 
 
But be doers of the word, and not hearers only . . . 
 
James says to be doers, not hearers, and not feelers. Doer means keeper or obeyer. We are commanded to do the 
Word. It is not enough to hear the Word We must take the next step and obey the Word, whether we feel like it or not. 
The power of the Word is not acƟvated when you hear it. The power of the Word is acƟvated when you do it. Charles 
Stanley says, “Obey God and leave the consequences to Him.” The outcome of our obedience is not our business, that’s 
God’s business. Our business is to obey God. He will handle the rest.
